Setting: Foothills and Plains

The Foothills and Plains

Not To Scale: assume the landscape is generally larger or farther away than it may appear

❧ The Weather/Climate
It's currently spring in the foothills area and the temperature averages in the mid 60°s Fahrenheit during the day and can drop as low as 40° Fahrenheit on colder nights. Late snow storms occur infrequently, as do particularly sunny days where the temperature can reach the 90°s Fahrenheit.

At night, a cool fog settles over the nearby mountain range and creeps through the surrounding forests, but never reaches past the rivers. The fog melts away over the course of dawn and is completely gone during the day.

❧ A: The Lake
A mid-sized lake (about 10 mi. in diameter). Below the water, there are ruins and concrete and junk that was washed into the lake after the floods receded. The water itself is a little more brackish than one would generally assume of a landlocked body of water. Probably not salty enough to kill you though, and can be purified by god-means or other methods for drinking.

Near the edge of the lake are the ruined remnants of some sort of super-highway, chunks of it standing almost upright in the ground, like great monumental structures grown over with moss and grasses.

❧ B: The Plains
Long flat plains that extend north as far as the eye can see, the grass is almost uniformly 6ft, and the blades are dry and sharp. Foundations of ruined buildings can occasionally be found clustered throughout the plains, under the soil with random surviving walls or framework sticking out. They look like they were probably old ranch or factory buildings. Rusted out farming gadgetry can be found here, including a couple of monstrous, Caterpillar-sized, crop-picking machines that have sinced been badly corroded and knocked over, their many delicate, robotic limbs now torn away by the elements and missing.

The soil is fairly rich and good for growing things, although food grown in it will still contain the poison found in everything in Thusia. Those who had Veseiy's immunity potion while it was available can eat from the earth just fine, others will have to either get things purified after it's harvested or figure out some way to gain immunity.

❧ C: The Foothills
Fairly smooth hills that gently roll in increasing size until they meet up with the mountainous forest. The grass here is soft and short, trees are generally sparse, and other than the creatures that burrow in them there is nothing particularly unpleasant here.

There is one area in the hills by the river that seems to be overtaken by wild shrubs and trees, that grow thick and tangled. It's not an easy thicket to get through, but the reward is fruits that haven't yet been picked over by other wildlife.

❧ D & F: The Forest
Trees here are still very tall, but nothing like the gargantuan ones in the rainforest, and are a mix of different kinds of coniferous and deciduous trees around D while largely coniferous in F.

There are remains of buildings here as well, most buried or overgrown by roots. What does remain appears blackened, scorched, and rotted--ravaged by some out-of-control inferno before it was flooded generations ago.

❧ E: The Marsh
A marshy area that used to be covered in water. The soil is soggy and it's easy to get trapped and sink in here if you aren't careful where you step. There are the remains of a large dam here, clearly ravaged by the elements and completely torn through by the rushing river.

❧ G: The Mountain Fissure
A cave! Water runs out of the mouth of the cave, in a bubbling creek about 6ft at its widest. Though the river seems very narrow here, with how wide and rapid the rivers get once they're out of the mountains, there must be a good deal of water running concealed deep in the rocks, and the currents here are fatal if one falls in, despite how innocuous it may look.

❧ The Wildlife
The animals here seem to be largely herbivores, and are less likely to hunt down humans for a meal, but that doesn't mean they're entirely harmless if they're disturbed. For now, think of them as larger, tougher versions of their more familiar plains-animal counterparts on Earth: slow moving herds of elephant-sized oxen, large and speedy hares, groundhogs that will bite your ankles if you step into their many holes...
